Apple Inc. launched the iPhone 17e on Monday. The phone starts at $599 with 256GB storage. Apple aims to protect its share in the competitive global smartphone market.
Memory chip prices are rising due to a global shortage. Apple appears willing to absorb some extra costs to keep its entry model attractive.
By offering more storage at the same price, Apple strengthens the 17e’s value. Analysts say this move works like a price cut because customers previously paid more for higher storage.
Customers in over 70 countries can pre-order the iPhone 17e at 6:15 a.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday. Apple will release the device on March 11.
Apple powered the 17e with its new A19 chip built on 3-nanometer technology. The upgrade improves performance. The phone also features Apple’s new C1X modem for faster speeds and better power efficiency.
The 17e now supports MagSafe charging. Users can access magnetic chargers and accessories. The phone supports wireless charging up to 15 watts.
Apple also unveiled a redesigned iPad Air with the new M4 chip. The 11-inch model starts at $599, while the 13-inch version costs $799.
Meanwhile, Google has explored hosting servers in its data centers to power a future Siri version using Gemini, according to The Information. Apple and Google did not comment on the report.
