Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” was buried in a golden casket on Monday. His family held the funeral.
Mexican special forces wounded him during a firefight in late February. His bodyguards exchanged fire with troops who tried to capture him. He later died from his injuries.
The 59-year-old founded the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Authorities considered him Mexico’s most-wanted criminal. The Federal Bureau of Investigation had offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his arrest.
After his death, cartel members launched retaliatory attacks. They burned vehicles and blocked roads in 20 Mexican states.
National Guard members deployed heavily to prevent new violence during the funeral near Guadalajara in Jalisco, a CJNG stronghold.
Mourners carried large floral tributes into the funeral home. One tribute was shaped like a rooster, reflecting his love of cockfighting.
