In a major development, Cricket South Africa has announced its central contract list for next year, but surprisingly, senior player David Miller has been left out of the list.
This contract list is also of particular importance as the CSA prepares for the 2027 home ODI World Cup. The players included in this list are likely to be part of the Proteas team’s core squad that will participate in this major ICC event.
Cricket South Africa unveils its central contract list
On Tuesday, March 31, Cricket South Africa released its central contract list for next year, with one big surprise being the omission of David Miller. He was on a hybrid contract last year, but his complete omission now suggests that his retirement from international cricket could be imminent. However, he could continue to play franchise cricket around the world.
Not only Miller, but Rassie van der Dussen has also been dropped from the hybrid list, while Anrich Nortje has been ruled out due to injury.
On the other hand, the new list shows that the CSA is focusing on building a team for the future. The first-time signings include Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Matthew Breetzke and Ottneil Baartman.
This change actually marks the beginning of a new era. With the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind, the board wants to give young players a chance to strengthen the team’s foundation, while senior players are gradually being left behind.

Simon Harmer awarded a hybrid contract
Cricket South Africa is one of the few boards that offers hybrid contracts to its players. Under this model, players can play in different leagues and are available for the national team as needed, providing a flexible system.
The board has completely excluded David Miller from this system. In the current central contract list, the board has given only all-rounder Simon Harmer a hybrid contract.
In addition, the board has identified 20 players and has declared them “Players of National Interest”. The board considers these players as backup options and also sees them as strong candidates for future international cricket.
On the other hand, 15 players have been given central contracts in women’s cricket… Among them, Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp are considered the main pillars of the team… The team’s focus is on the upcoming T20 World Cup.
South Africa national cricket team set to face Australia national cricket team next

These matches hold great importance for white-ball preparation, and they also play a crucial role in the ICC World Test Championship.
The first ODI match will be played on September 24, while after the conclusion of the ODI series, the Test series will begin on October 9. The second Test is scheduled for October 18. This series could prove to be a big test for the new South African team, where young and new players will get a chance to prove themselves.
